This contract is on Tuesday lunchtimes begins in January 2012.
You will be working with 2 Quebec Government employees.

Date(s): Tuesdays – 11h30 – 13h30
Class: Semi-Private
Level: Low Intermediate
15 weeks, 1 x 2-hour class per week (30 hours)

Are you a dynamic individual with a flair for helping others?
Do you have an excellent grasp of English and understand the grammar rules and regulations of the language?

The 16th Annual Quebec City Community Christmas Hamper Campaign has begun.

Here’s a list of the non-perishable food needed this year…
Filling over 200 hampers with the same type and amount of food is a big challenge.
Your donations help a great deal, especially the following items:
Cereal
Canned goods: soups, tuna, salmon, tomatoes, tomato sauce and paste, fruits and vegetables
Dried pasta / macaroni and cheese
Jello / puddings / cookies
Coffee / tea / juice
Mustard, mayonnaise, ketchup. etc.
No homemade items or foods with expired best-before dates, please.
Financial donations are needed to buy food. Please give generously.
Receipts are given for donations of $10 and up.

What is life like in Quebec City?

Wednesday 26th October 2011 saw two authors and an award-winning world-famous cartoonist visit AngloStore, the Quebec City English bookstore at Place Naviles.
An appreciative crowd of around 40 people came out for the midweek event and were not disappointed.
Some of those in attendance were studying English with Quebec City English as a Second Language school, Les Services Emchar Inc.
The evening was also used as a fundraiser for the 16th Annual Community Christmas Hamper Campaign (more of which, later).
First up was Job Patstone, a long-time Quebec City resident, orginally from Hamilton, Ontario.
Job spoke about his life and his reasons for writing ‘The Patience of Job’, a semi-autobiographical book detailing his childhood and often strained relationship with his father.
You see how this pans out as the years progress.
The latter half of Job’s work allows us to look into his marriage and life with a French-Canadian spouse.
Next up was Brigitte Ostiguy, owner of Les Éditions du Chien Rouge and author of several travel and tourism related guide books.
Her latest offering ‘The Québécois Book’, points out something that you may or may not already know – that you already know, use and understand an awful lot of French words and phrases whether you realised it or not.
While Job got his message across by being factual and to the point, Brigitte was more spontaneous and naturally funny.
The two authors were the perfect foil for each other in that respect.
Two vastly different topics and styles of book dealt with by two completely different types of people.
The artwork on show in The Québécois Book was eye-catching and expertly done.
And so it should be, as the artwork was drawn by non other than Serge Gaboury, the professional cartoonist who lists a long career with Le Soleil, Journal de Québec, Le Devoir, Protegez-Vous Magazine, Croc and many more to his name.
Serge gave a short drawing workshop and some lucky attendees got to take home signed copies of his work.
He told those present that he wasn’t used to giving talks in English so he’d brought along his best English pens and would ‘draw in English instead’.
Job, Brigitte and Serge answered questions from the audience. Something everyone seemed to enjoy.
There was a collection during the course of the evening for The 16th Annual Community Christmas Hamper Campaign.
This worthwhile and much needed initiative, now in its 16th year, allows those a little less fortunate than ourselves to have a decent couple of meals over the festive season.
Nancy Thomas from the organising committe was present to receive a cheque from AngloStore for the amount collected.
A huge thanks to all who contributed. It is much appreciated.

The Fall 2011 session of Saturday StoryTime, in association with AngloStore, the Quebec City English bookstore at Place Naviles, has been going well so far.
Rachel Vogel, an English as a Second Language teacher, approached us recently and asked if she could do one of the readings.
We readily agreed and are glad we did. Rachel is clearly a natural with children and had them all eating out of the palm of her hand during her StoryTime session.
On the day, she was ably assisted by Joan Vogel, her aunt.

The Fall 2011 StoryTime session runs from Saturday 8th October 2011 to Saturday 26th October 2011.

New Les Services Emchar inc. office manager Susan Stewart receives the keys to premises from Isabelle Green.
As Isabelle Green heads off on maternity leave for a few months, we extend a warm welcome to Susan Stewart who is taking up the reins for the time being.
Your phonecalls and emails will now be answered by Susan and she’s only too happy to be of assistance.
When you pop in to the office during the week, you’ll also be met Susan’s smiling face.
She’ll deal with any queries that you may have regarding our English-language services.
Like all of our staff, Susan is bilingual (English/French) so you can be served in both of Canada’s official languages.
The choice is yours.
We’re really glad Susan is with us.
We were extremely impressed during the interview process.
Our newest recruit to the burgeoning Les Services Emchar inc. empire is an anglophone and has been married to her French-Canadian husband for over 30 years. Together they have three sons.
Quebec City has been home for Susan for over 20 years and she’s fully integrated into the society here.
Susan brings qualities that we were looking for – a wealth of teaching and business experince, a self-confessed lover of the English language and a genuine appetite to assist those learning English.
Her knowledge of the ESL tutoring industry was something that we were actively seeking.

Dear All,
As I begin my 6-month maternity leave, I am both excited to know that I will soon be holding my newborn son and sad to have to say goodbye.
I wouldn’t enjoy my work so much if it wasn’t for the amazing team of people I work with.
So, I would like to thank all of my co-workers and you, our clients and students, for making my work experience such an enjoyable one.
I would also like to thank my replacement, Susan Stewart, for her dedication, her enthusiasm and for being an overall great person to work with.
I look forward to coming back next year sometime and to seeing how much business has grown. In the meantime, I will be stopping by the office with baby to see how things are going. Goodbye for now!
